If you own a small business, then you likely take every step you can to keep your current bathrooms clean to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus among your customers and staff members. Properly cleaning and disinfecting business bathrooms on a regular schedule is always important. However, you can further reduce germs spreading in your bathrooms by remodeling them and integrating the right fixtures and materials in your bathroom design plans.

Learn four tips for designing a new bathroom that is easy to clean and helps limit the spread of all types of illness-causing germs.

1. Choose an Easy-to-Clean Sink Style

Some bathroom sink styles are much easier to keep clean and sanitary than others. To make disinfecting your sinks easier, choose sinks with few nooks and crannies where dirt, grime, and germs can accumulate.

Two sink styles that are easy to keep clean include under-mount and integrated sinks. While under-mount sinks attach to counter undersides, integrated sinks actually mold into the countertop design. Both sink styles lack rims where dirt, grime, bacteria, and viruses can accumulate, making the sink disinfection process much quicker, easier, and efficient.

2. Select Antimicrobial Countertops

Choose a scratch-resistant, non-porous antimicrobial countertop material when designing a bathroom with maximum germ control in mind. When scratches develop or pores are present in any countertop material, they provide a place for grime, viruses, and bacteria to hide out, making countertops much more difficult to disinfect thoroughly.

One countertop material that is not non-porous and extremely scratch-resistant is quartz. Some quartz countertops also have an incorporated antimicrobial compound in their surfaces. These compounds kill some pathogens that land on the countertops before you even have a chance to disinfect them.

3. Integrate Touchless Technology When Possible

Toilet-flushing mechanisms, sink faucets, and manual soap dispensers are among the most germ-covered objects in a public bathroom. Eliminate these surfaces altogether when you opt for touchless bathroom fixtures and devices instead of their manual counterparts.

Two main types of touchless toilets are available today, and each has their unique benefits.

One touchless toilet type has an infrared beam motion sensor that triggers the toilet to flush when a person using the toilet steps off of it. When choosing this toilet type, you don't have to worry about patrons forgetting to flush the toilet, although these toilets can occasionally flush before a user steps off the toilet instead of after.

A newer version of the touchless toilet has a sensor placed near the top of the toilet that a person must wave their hand in front of to flush the toilet. While this toilet type is unlikely to flush early, patrons may occasionally forget to wave their hands over the sensors and instead leave the toilet unflushed.

Other touchless bathroom fixtures, including sink faucets, hand dryers, and soap dispensers, activate when their motion sensors detect hands below them.

4. Opt for Germ-Killing Copper Door Handles

Another bathroom surface that tends to harbor a large number of germs is the bathroom door handle. While a bathroom designed to limit the spread of illness should ideally be door-less, door-less bathroom designs are not always possible, especially in locations with little square footage to devote to bathroom usage.

When you cannot eliminate the bathroom door and its handle altogether, opt for door handles made of copper. Copper alloys have natural germ-killing abilities that many healthcare facilities around the world take advantage of. In fact, studies have shown that when high-touch surfaces in hospitals are made of copper instead of other common materials, about a 90 percent reduction is possible in the number of bacteria living on these surfaces.

Now that the COVID-19 epidemic has led to many businesses amping up their facility disinfection routines, you may realize just how difficult keeping your current bathroom clean and sanitary is. Follow these tips when remodeling your bathroom to reduce the spread of all germs throughout your facility.
