Funny Plumbing Noises You Shouldn't Ignore

Apr 12, 2022

Do you always panic when you hear funny noises in your house or think it's a paranormal matter? Sometimes you may not know where weird sounds come from. But unusual sounds could signify there is an issue in your house.

Vibrations, drips, hums, and clucks are sounds that indicate your plumbing system needs your attention. Each noise means you have a different problem, and the only way to stop them or avoid further damage is by calling a plumber. Here are common plumbing sounds and what they could mean.

Whistling Faucets or Showerhead

There are various reasons your faucet or showerhead may sound like it is angry. Whistling sounds can occur if there's a build-up or clog within the showered or tap. Cleaning or replacing these plumbing components might fix the problem.

You may also hear a whistling sound if the water pressure is too low or the piping system has air. You will need a plumber's help to determine the actual cause of the noise and fix the problem.

Gurgling Drains

Whenever wastewater goes down the drain but doesn't run down as fast as it should, air bubbles form, and a gurgling sound follows. The primary culprit here is a partial clog either in the drain or down the wastewater pipes.

Gurgles are often heard at one specific drain or next to one appliance in particular. For instance, it's common to detect a gurgling sound or sewage smell each time you flush the toilet or after running a washer. To unclog the drain and stop the gurgling, use a plunger or a plumbing snake if the obstruction is deeper down the drain. If these DIY techniques don't work, contact a plumber.

Banging Pipes

You will hear a banging sound when a component is stuck in the pipes and keeps hitting the plastic or metal water pipes. This constant action causes the item to vibrate, producing a banging sound.

Initially, the item will float around and hit the pipes, but over time it will cause a blockage if nothing is done. You are likely to notice this sound after turning off a faucet or when appliances like the washer or dishwasher stop filling with water. You may also hear the sound if the water pressure is too high or air is entering the pipes.

Dripping Noise

Although this sound is obvious, most property owners ignore it like it means nothing. It's easy to overlook a dripping faucet, a problem that occurs when the tap is faulty or the pipe isn't mounted correctly. But the leakage, no matter how insignificant it is, will increase your utility expenses. Besides the high bills, you will have to deal with mold growth on the walls and floor. Hiring a pro to replace the faucet or pipe will save you money in the long run.

Hissing Sound

In most cases, hissing sounds are accompanied by a water bill increase. The sound means water pressure in the pipes is high and needs regulation. Having a plumber install a regulator will return the pressure range to normal, reducing the noise.

Rattling or Shaking Sound

You might have a loose plumbing component if you hear a rattling or shaking sound after draining out water or flushing the toilet. Checking the wastewater drainage components might help identify the problematic spot and tighten them to eliminate the sound. However, hire a pro if you don't see anything but the sound doesn't go away.
